City Clerk Homer, Alaska Please use this most current version of this letter)

Please read our comment at the next City Council meeting February 27, 2017 as we will be unable to be physically present.

This is our statement for the Homer City Council resolution suggesting that our city become a sanctuary city for illegal aliens. It is our intent that it be read into the minutes of the city council meeting of February 27, 2017.

We oppose any resolution that would attempt to make Homer, Alaska a sanctuary city or that would condemn the president of the United States and its government using the hateful language with which it has been written. Please emphasize our opposition to the word “illegal” when used in conjunction with immigrants. Further, we are offended by the thinly disguised harsh and defamatory language contained in the resolution as it was posted on facebook.

We do not desire that our community be out of compliance with the laws of the United States of America and we strongly object to this resolution and urge its defeat.

Further, we call into question the professional ethics of elected, sitting city council members, who via the wording contained in this resolution appear to be seeking to impose their personal agenda on the citizenry of Homer, and who appear to be seeking to undermine our government and our sitting president. To that end, we support, if appropriate, a formal ethics investigation into the professional behaviors of these council members and sanctions (up to removal from office) as any investigation deems necessary. Please note they were elected to represent all citizens of Homer in accordance with the laws of this city, this state, and this country and that their public persona should not be a platform for their personal views.

Respectfully,

William D. and Marianne Schlegelmilch
