Dear Mr. Mayor, I have read the amended resolution regarding 'inclusion.' I am puzzled as to why we need this and I am against the resolution. Homer is diverse and very tolerant. This resolution has done nothing but waste time and cause division in our community, which is the very thing this resolution is against.
Please vote no on making Homer a Sanctuary City. Please do not put us as a city, in a potential position, to lose the Federal Funding programs that are in place and being utilized to aid and help the people who already live here. Please do not allow certain members of the city council to bring their personal political issues into a city-wide arena. The City of Homer should not be making a decision that will affect me, my family and those who live here who do not agree with this. We as citizens have the right to protest laws that we feel are unjust, (on a personal level) but we do not and should not have the corporate power to encourage breaking or ignoring a Federal Law. That is treason. When crime rates rise, and an already overburdened and stretched aid programs break from non-funding by the Federal Government, which has a potential of happening if this is voted through. A sanctuary city would not be receiving any federal funding. That affects the airport, the roads, family planning, mental health and our hospital just to name a few. We will be encouraging people to come here, and will have little or no resouces to help them. Individuals who feel strongly, that this is a correct position to take, can and have the freedom to make their choices. They do not have the right to make mine. If this is voted and passed, when aid programs fail, and we have more crime, someone will be blamed. For evey action, there is always a reaction. There is a chance that the consequence of this action could bring even more separation to an already clearly divided community. I would gladly support something that brings us together rather than hammers the wedge between us a little farther in.
