Good Morning: I write today as a proponent in favor of Resolution 17-019. While my voice is just one of many, I believe it is my civic, professional, and human duty to speak on behalf of the inclusivity for which Homer is so well known, and that which
drew my wife and I to this "Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea." Having moved to Alaska from Chicago, I knew the incredible advantages of diversity and acceptance. After living and teaching in Seward for four years, I chose to make the move to Homer upon the retirement of one of my mentors. He encouraged
me to choose my path wisely, but also that of all the places in Alaska I could end up, the humanity and general decency of Homer was unmatched. This resolution would codify such decency. No one should ever feel threatened - through laws, actions, or the absence thereof - for who they are or where they are from. The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent international human rights laws have furthered the
cause of acceptance of all people on an equal footing, and I believe that Homer should be part of that cause. Acceptance, appreciation, cordiality, adventure, and tolerance have all been pillars of Alaskan society for generations, and this simply makes current
practice more permanent. People come to Alaska for their own reasons. Sometimes these reasons are known, and other times, they are not. If we foster a community of acceptance, appreciation, and diversity, the outcome will be a more human (and hopefully more humanitarian)
