Subject: Resolution 17-XXX

Dear Mayor and City Council Members,

Having read the proposed Resolution 17-XXX I am given pause to consider the lack of "love and toleration" being forced upon our peaceful Hamlet by the Sea.

Yes, there is a new administration in Washington.

Yes, many citizens are not happy with the tone of that administration.

Yes, the city of Homer has in previous administrations sought to pass resolutions voicing displeasure of that administration (most recently Bush).

For you, the elected representatives of Homer, to become political activists in the national scene is not within your scope of authority.

Perhaps some view this resolution as a safeguard to keep Homer as the tolerant community that it already is.

Perhaps others view this as a tangible way to inform minorities that they are indeed welcome in Homer.

My take-away from this verbose and misplaced resolution is that the adherents are not only intolerant of the current administration but also of any Homer residents who may have voted for it.  This strong undercurrent erodes the peacefulness of our very diverse, but stable, town.

Eight long years ago the tables were turned and I felt the need to hunker-down and go into protection mode.  Protect, mind you,-not revolt.  I don't recall nationally organized resistance movements spearheaded by the losing party.  I, and many Homer residents, suffered through every failed policy without fostering revolt.

I urge you to set aside partisan politics, fear mongering, and an over inflated sense of civic duty and TABLE this resolution.  Do not even allow discussion.  It is the discussion that will divide neighbors and friends.  It is the hashing out and lashing out that will further divide our community.  AVOIDING DESTRUCTIVE DIVISION IS WITHIN YOUR SPHERE OF INFLUENCE.

Vote NO  if the resolution comes to a vote.

Respectfully submitted,
