Mr. Mayor,
As a 35 year Homer resident, I'd like to express to you my opinion about the proposed City of Homer ordinance to make Homer a "Sanctuary City". First of all, I am currently a City of Homer employee and my opinion in no way reflects or represents the opinion of the Homer Police Department. However, I am concerned about this proposal and find it disrespectful to many other (legal) citizens of our community that are in constant need of our help. I am speaking about the disabled veterans, the mentally ill that walk our streets and our Homer High School young adults that "couch surf" on a weekly basis. To not deal with their needs before even considering being a "Sanctuary City" is nothing short of irresponsible and as I mentioned before, disrespectful. I have been in law enforcement most of my adult life here in the Homer/Anchor Point area and know first hand the struggles of our less fortunate members of our community. I urge you to reject this proposal and rekindle the premise of helping those who are currently in need of our assistance.
